چکیده
BACKGROUND Microalgae are a diverse group of photosynthetic microorganisms significant interest to the biotechnology industry, either as sustainable source natural compounds, or light-driven cell factories produce recombinant metabolites and proteins. Their ability utilise light, CO2, basic nutrients leads simple low-cost phototrophic cultivation process. This is particularly relevant low- middle-income countries, all which require system that cheap, technically operate, readily scalable, can meet Good Manufacturing Practice requirements. A disposable ‘hanging bag’-type photobioreactor operated bubble column fits these criteria. RESULTS In this study, characterisation design modifications improve performance 15 L hanging bag reported. The behaviour using different sparger designs was investigated together with gas hold-up, mixing time, mass transfer coefficient CO2. flow rate 5 min−1 new modified height-to-diameter ratio led two-fold improvement in algal biomass productivity when culturing green microalga Chlorella sorokiniana. luciferase-expressing Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain also demonstrated an 11% increase luciferase content. CONCLUSION first attempt characterise brings industry-favoured single-use concept into research field technology. dimensions improves microalgal demonstrates potential systems for cultivation. © 2021 Authors. A novel horizontal photobioreactor for high-density cultivation of microalgae.
Microalgae are a promising source of biofuels and bioproducts, as they consume CO2 to grow, multiply quickly, and can be cultivated in wastewater and on marginal land. Development of low-cost and high-efficiency microalgal cultivation systems is important to the cost-competitiveness of algae. A floating horizontal photobioreactor (HBR) was developed that is inexpensive and scalable, as it is ma...
متن کاملEngineering characterisation of a shaken, single-use photobioreactor for early stage microalgae cultivation using Chlorella sorokiniana.
This work describes the characterisation and culture performance of a novel, orbitally shaken, single-use photobioreactor (SUPBr) system for microalgae cultivation. The SUPBr mounted on an orbitally shaken platform was illuminated from below. Investigation of fluid hydrodynamics indicated a range of different flow regimes and the existence of 'in-phase' and 'out-of-phase' conditions. Quantifica...
متن کامل[A novel flat plate photobioreactor for microalgae cultivation].
Flashing light effect on microalgae could significantly improve the light efficiency and biomass productivity of microalgae. In this paper, the baffles were introduced into the traditional flat plate photobioreactor so as to enhance the flashing light effect of microalgae. Making Chlorella sp. as the model microalgae, the effect of light intensity and inlet velocity on the biomass concentration...
متن کاملAn Interactive Tool for Outdoor Computer Controlled Cultivation of Microalgae in a Tubular Photobioreactor System
This paper describes an interactive virtual laboratory for experimenting with an outdoor tubular photobioreactor (henceforth PBR for short). This virtual laboratory it makes possible to: (a) accurately reproduce the structure of a real plant (the PBR designed and built by the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Almería, Spain); (b) simulate a generic tubular PBR by changing ...
